The keys, together with the corresponding corner castings, as defined in the standards, including ISO 1161:1984, constitute a standardized (rotating) coupling system for connecting and securing transport containers. Their main uses are the safe stacking of containers, their securing in place on a container ship, a semi-trailer or a railway wagon, and their lifting and handling by specialized container handling equipment such as container carrier trucks, accessible stacking trucks, container hoists, side hoists and various types of container transfer cranes.
